Hot Call 4000 from Command Communications
Our Review
This small, robust and well designed unit is both attractive and is easy
to understand and use. The thorough instructions are very straightforward,
and include a diagram for installation, which took about 5 minutes. Also
included in the packaging is a stand for the unit and adhesive strips
for permanently attaching the unit to a computer or desktop. The angle
of the display is adjustable for optimum viewing and includes a contrast
control.
Once connected, we were able to use our computer online, without any loss
of connection speed, and found it to operate invisibly in the background.
When plugged in and idle, a small green light appears to let you know
that the unit is ready for action. Upon connecting to the internet, the
light then flashes green to let you know that the modem is connecting.
Once the connection is established, the light is steady red. When there
is an incoming call, the same light flashes red and the unit rings, to
alert the user. Simultaneously, the 3-line LCD displays critical information
about the call, including the callers number and name.
Other useful items that are displayed are the number of new calls received,
the number of total calls received, and the time and date. In addition,
other special icons include:
- PRIORITY - Designates a number that’s been programmed as a priority
call
- REPEAT - The call has been received more than once
- CALLWAIT - Flashes when Call Waiting call is received
- MSGWAIT - Voice Mail received
- LDC - Long distance call received
We found the Caller ID functions of the HotCall to be very useful and
intuitive, and especially enjoyed the large buttons for reviewing the
list of callers and the unique "Call Back" button.
It is important to note that while online with the unit engaged, that
only the HotCall 4000 unit rings, not the telephones of the house. But
when the computer is not online, all of the phones react normally to incoming
calls.
We found that the HotCall 4000 did not affect the connection quality and
volume of incoming calls in any way.
Under testing, we found that when answering a call, our internet service
provider would disconnect us in under 30 seconds, but that we could easily
reestablish our connection and resume surfing from the same location by
clicking the "Reload" or "Refresh" button on our browser.
The HotCall is the top of the line unit, designed to be used with a Caller
ID/Call Waiting* and, optionally, Voicemail service from your phone company,
but it can be used without Voicemail.
The HotCall 4000 comes from the innovators of line sharing devices and
the entire series is our top choice in this category. It’s one year warranty
is double or quadruple that of other units we’ve tested, and tech support
is offered via their toll-free number.
